| Benefits – Producers / Distributors |
What this means for the Producers / Distributors:
- Eliminate print film. Cost of print film in India is roughly Rs.60, 000 to Rs. 75, 000 depending on the length of the film. This figure is widely used as what distributors will save under digital cinema. Print cost is currently about 15-20% of a film’s production cost.
- No print degradation. Print film has the benefit of being a universal standard, much in the way that 35mm consumer film is. A disadvantage of the technology is that the quality degrades with use, resulting in scratches and burnout. With digital projection, this problem is eliminated.
- Easy to increase the nos. of theatre quickly if you have a hit film.
- Strong safeguard against piracy: every show can have watermark indicating theatre, time and date.
- Flexibility: multiple language sound tracks and multiple language subtitles. In a particular week, if two big films are slated to release, the same can be shown in a single cinema and hence resulting in higher occupancies.
-
Makes distribution costs variable. Under the current system, distributors are required to order prints prior to having a good estimate of demand. Effectively the cost is fixed. With digital, the cost is variable. DVDs can be made as needed. With satellite distribution, the delivery mechanism is point to multipoint.
